Purchase of former CN railway for recreational path top Okanagan news story for 2015

A trail through the Central Okanagan offering views of picturesque lakes, farms and mountains will soon be a world-class cycling and walking route for locals and tourists, says Lake Country Mayor James Baker.

A referendum affirming Lake Country residents’ willingness to invest in the former CN railway was held earlier this year, attracting a record number of voters.

For its historic significance and promised lasting legacy, the start of an abandoned railway’s transformation into a recreational trail has been chosen as the top Okanagan news story of 2015 by The Daily Courier.

The train’s passenger service, which began in the early 1920s, ended in the 1960s, with the last freight train rolling in 2013.
